Question: My router has an integrated firewall. Do I need to subscribe to the Virgin Media Security Firewall service?
Answer: The Virgin Media Security Firewall is a personal firewall. This security application will reside on your PC and not on your router.
The 2-Wire router provided by Virgin does include a built-in firewall. However, it will only protect your network from external threats and not each individual computer. It will not stop any spyware or virus that attempts to send your personal information to the Internet. The protection that the router provides is only in one direction: towards your computer. The Virgin Media Security Firewall provides an easy to use interface that will also provide more control on an application level.
If you are using a Netopia router that you received from Virgin, the router has an excellent built-in firewall. Both the Netopia and the Virgin Media Security Firewall offer similar protection. If you have a Netopia router in your small business and have someone on staff with the knowledge of using a firewall in a network administration role, then Virgin recommends that you continue using the Netopia firewall, as certain features, such as port blocking, are not available in the Virgin Media Security Firewall. However, you may prefer the user-friendliness of the Virgin Media Security Firewall.
A firewall will not protect your computer from viruses or spyware. Even if you have a firewall, we recommend that you subscribe to the Virgin Media Security Anti-Virus and Virgin Media Security Anti-Spyware services.
Having the Virgin Media Security Firewall and the router firewall running will not cause any compatibility issues with your computer.
